M4 - Student practice clinic (2300-GPTE-M4-SPRC/1) (rok akademicki 2021/22)

This is a class held periodically, and it is our only lesson on Wednesday. It was supposed to start at 8:45 am and end at 1:00 pm, according to our timetable. But Madam Paulina Marchlik explained that for now, since we have not yet started fieldwork, we will be having online lessons from 3:30 pm to 5 pm because right now it is the time for practices in schools; surely the final-year students. Before she began the lesson, Madam Paulina ensured that everything was alright, had clear sound and that students were comfortable. She was funny, struggling to adjust her earpiece, just naturally, as if she was not in front of the students. I mean, when I compared with my professors back at home, they were intimidating, always too orderly, and "teacher-like". We needed to gather our courage to approach them, though things have changed now.

Then she did a recap of the previous lesson to refresh our memories, before going straight to the lesson of the day. She situated the event in an immersion context for young non-English speakers in the UK. We were expected to comment or identify the missing grammar structure of the kids' speeches, and she gave feedbacks explained, and made comments on our contributions, drawing our attention to what we could not see, and what was expected of us, as we proceeded. I think she adopted the inductive approach with us, allowing us to infer answers that she either confirmed or invalidated.

After this, the teacher split us into discussion groups to share our opinions on the next task. It helped to relax the atmosphere somehow, thought to a very limited extent because the class was not boring, just that in the groups we were among peers, which is different from when we are with the teacher. Also, some students who put off their cameras who might be dozing off were forced to talk or be more active in the subgroups.

During the class, I was a bit disturbed by the fact that I was often answering questions more than some of my classmates. I felt like I was monopolizing the platform. So, at times I would just hold on for others to respond, and if there was no one who opted to talk, then I would talk. At one time the silence was so long that the teacher asked if we were still there.

I mean, we are more than 30 students in this course, but the majority did not participate. What I would have done in the teacher’s shoes to involve everybody is that I would have just called them in order, and encouraged them to say something. Also,  the video she shared for us to give our reflection was very funny and the teaching context reminded me of my own classroom back at home. I loved it!

All in all, the class was very dynamic and interesting. At the beginning of the class, I felt that Mme Paulina was talking a little bit slow, and I remembered I asked myself if she would be able to touch all that she planned for the day. I even told myself that she must be one of the teachers who interviewed me, because one was very quiet for an interview. In fact, I was worrying over nothing, because she did finish her day’s task successfully, and explained the homework.
