The Role of the Teacher in Modern Education Miamo Lydie Department of Pedagogy , University of Warsaw M3 - Professional and Academic Discourse  2300-GPTE-M3-PAD: First Year Writing Professor  MaƂgorzata Matysik January 31, 2022       ABSTRACT This paper gives a brief history of the general trend that characterized the role of the teacher in the traditional educational system, and the gradual reforms that have led to the consistent development and transformation of the role of the teacher from a “producer” of knowledge in a teacher-centered classroom, to an “extractor” of knowledge in a student-centered classroom. It also outlines a number of roles identified by some educational gurus, that a teacher evolving in a modern system of education should ideally assume, in order to ensure learners’ autonomy and meet their individual needs and goals.     THE ROLE OF A TEACHER IN MODERN...

REFLECTION ON PRONUNCIATION Before, as a pupil, student, and language teacher, I had never experienced any circumstances where the phonetic part of pronunciation was considered something very important, or even critical in language learning. It was treated as something “good to know”, that one just mentions in passing or just writes beside a new word for formality, and this is exactly how I perceived phonetics, isolated from pronunciation. This is why within the framework of my Graduate Program in Teaching English to Young Learners at the University of Warsaw, I was very surprised when last semester I found out that I got the wrong pronunciations of the letter “a” for example. Based on this error, I even produced and distributed a learning tool “The Alpha Story” to help students to remember the sounds of the letters of the alphabet with a story, during the period of crisis in my country when all schools were closed for some years. I was also pronounced “who” with the /w/ soun...

Reflection on Pronunciation (Adrian Underhill)

Reflection on Pronunciation   Macmillan Education ELT, (2011, March 4). Introduction to Teaching Pronunciation Workshop - Adrian Underhill (COMPLETE) Introduction to Teaching Pronunciation Workshop - Adrian Underhill (COMPLETE) - YouTube In this presentation of 1:02 minutes, the teacher walks the audience through a practical approach to teaching phonetics in order to impart to the listeners the fundamentals of pronunciation. With such great dexterity, he is able to demonstrate how it is important to understand how and why pronunciation is not (only) a mental activity, but essentially a physical one, where a specific set of muscles come into play. He is convinced that Keeping pronunciation in the head is a problem that hinders effective learning and demonstrates how we can make sounds move and become visible, for better understanding and hence fast learning and mastery. Hence adopting a visible approach to pronunciation will help even deaf persons to be able to underst...

My Teaching Philosophy Me as a Teacher In my view of teaching, I cherish learners’ autonomy .   Henri Holec was the first person who came up with the term “learner’s autonomy”, and he defined it as “ the ability to take charge of one's own learning." ( Holec, 1981).  It was later defined as “a capacity - for detachment, critical reflection, decision-making, and independent action” (Little, 1991). Erik and Erickson ( McLeod, 2018 ) identified 8 cognitive stages of development, with stage 2 (autonomy vs shame) being the age at which a child starts claiming and exercising his autonomy, as teachers, we should be conscious to let them have it.  I believe that every child has a gift within, and something to offer to the world. As a teacher, it is my duty to believe in my students, regardless of their situation, and to help them discover and develop their inborn gifts and talents, so as to put this potential at th...

PORTFOLIO: My Story

Image
My Story If someone ever told me that I would become a teacher, I would vehemently deny it. Just like every child, while growing up, I had a clear picture of the type of profession I wanted to have in the future. It was either an international lawyer or an international journalist. When I wanted to enroll in the university, my first choice was Law, and the second one was Journalism and Mass Communication.  I got my first choice. I felt that these professions influenced decisions across the world: the media exposes situations, and lawyers came up with proposals, initiated law reforms, and defended and influenced the decisions taken in relation to the law. This was how I saw the world, at my very tender age. For me, the teaching profession was limited only to the four walls of the classroom. But I wanted to be at the forefront and to be seen, to be a voice in this world, and teaching was too limiting for my great ambitions. But I was mistaken. As I grew in maturity,...
